learning new stuff

Ray's trying to teach me some UNIX. It's a slow process, because he talks fast and assumes you already know everything. Plus he tries to talk with the TV on, and I lack the filter for tuning out extra stuff, so I get frustrated and he gets mad. But anyway, I'm trying not to be a complete UNIX dork.

For Bastille Day, I'm watching the Tour de France. Which is apparently what most French people do, so it's like I'm there! ;)

So sad about Manuel ("Triki") Beltran, having to abandon today. As USPostal, the team finished with all 9 members the last four years, and he's a huge loss for the days ahead in the Pyrenees. Reuters reported that he'd suffered a concussion, and the NYTimes story says he didn't remember crashing. YIKES. Been there, done that, not good. They've all said that x-rays didn't show any broken bones, so that's at least something, but anytime you suffer a memory loss, you've taken a big hit.

In other news, hooray to the Norwegians for Thor Hushovd taking over the green (sprinter's) jersey, even if Tom Boonen had to abandon for him to get that. And to the French for David Mouncoutie, winning the stage on Bastille Day!

Don't forget useful commands like cd -a, pine, and pico

Mmm...I love me some BASH

Well, pine's a given, since that's how I read my mail (I'm so old school). :) I think Ray prefers vi over pico, so he'd be more likely to teach me that (although I'm a little impressed with myself that I did remember from somewhere that pico was an editor).

What does cd -a do? It gives me this:
Usage: cd [-plvn][-|]

which I think is just yelling at me that I'm not using it properly.

darling, you can get unix. i picked up TONS when i worked at the media lab. i have forgotten most of it now, i don't use it here.

i really like 'unix for the impatient' (addison wesley publishers), particularly if you have a bit of knowledge about how it works. i have a version i got when i was using it regularly, there must be a new edition (or several) since then.

You know, I wonder if I still have an account at MIT? [checking] Yes. Yes, I do. Odd.

I know I can learn it, since I grew up on MS-DOS, so I'm familiar with the idea of using a computer with text commands. It's just that it's been so long, and I like the pretty icon pictures! ;)

no, icon pictures are BAD! they're crutches for the unworthy. (hee hee!)

go play w/ athena. :)

Hehehe. I'm unworthy, then. ;)

It's actually not athena - my address is something crazy like emyowx at bronze dot lcs dot mit dot edu. I picked emyowx because it was 1993, and that was my user name at W&M, and emy (oddly enough) didn't occur to me.

haha, wow, they were still doing the whole first initial middle initial first four of last name format back then? (not to make it sound like "back then" was forever ago or anything). . . i just would've thought maybe they'd changed the system around a bit since then. apparently not, lol. well, at any rate there are currently no emyowx's at wm. ;)

Try "?" or "help." Those were the first two commands I ever learned, not that they were ever that useful. =)

The most useful thing you will ever learn in unix:

"man foo"
Where "foo" is the command you want information about.

In no time, you'll be doing wonderful stuff like:

cd /home/me; tar cf - . | (cd /home/you; tar xvf -)

And actually knowing what it does. :-)

Oh, I do know about 'man' - I just find them difficult to understand. :P

Just you go easy on that "rm" stuff, missy
Yay, more unix geeks!

Word from someone who has been there: rm only when certain! Embrace the power carefully.

Erik loves vi too. vi makes me want to stab myself in the eyes. Silly UNIX geeks. ;)

By the way, I plan to be at SnB on Sunday if you are ther we can make the yarn exchange. You'll have to remind me how much I owe you!
